GeekUp Leeds - Quiz Night - Wed 19th Nov, 6pm

November 17th, 2008 | No Comments | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Your friendly host for the evening will be Mr Tim Waters (aka Chippy) who will be facilitating a Geeky Quiz (QuizUp?)! There will be 3 rounds with 30 questions in total:

Round 1. General geekness
Round 2. Techy questions
Round 3. Internet memes

There’s been rumor of 20:20 presentations from The Hodge on “Search Like A Superstar” and Helen Harrop on “Creativity and Computing” if she can make it…

Which still means we’re looking for volunteers for presentations as they are not confirmed! :) Please get in touch if you’re interested in talking!

Rob and I unfortunately can’t make it as we’ve both committed to help out at the 20 x 20 Science Cafe at the Otley Science Festival where Rob will be predicting the Future of the Internet!!!!!

Big thanks to Tim for taking on GeekUp this month, I’m gutted to be missing the quiz!

GeekUp Leeds Needs You! Wed, Sept 17, 6pm

September 11th, 2008 | No Comments | Tags: , , , , , ,

My Last Project

This month at GeekUp we thought we’d borrow from Simon Wheatley’s idea that worked so well at BarCamp and invite GeekUpers to do a 20:20 on their last project.

Your last project could be a website, discovering Ruby Shoes, growing stuff #inthegarden, launching an affiliate network for a bathroom store, doing a web design 101 for a friend, running a celebrity gossip site, setting up your own home security camera network, singing articles from wikipedia accompanied by a ukelele, presenting your own radio show / podcast, setting up a business, joining a rowing club, learning how not to get into your own house, creative crafts, making a greenhouse watering system with an Arduino, PR 101… anything!

So if you’re interested in taking part, do let us know! We’re a friendly bunch and we’ll try not to heckle.

Big thanks to Simon for letting us nick his idea. It’s GPL’d by word of mouth :)

March 14th, 2008 | No Comments | Tags: , , , ,

It’s nearly GeekUp time again and on the theme of “rooms of the house”, this month’s GeekUp will be upstairs in a room called “the Study” at “the Living Room” on Greek Street. “The Lounge” kicked us out in favour of a larger group, but we’ll be back there again next month.

This month, we are lucky enough to have two 20:20 lightning talks:

There’s just about time to squeeze in an ad-hoc 20:20 if anyone feels the need. More »

GeekUp Special Roundup: Christian Heilmann on the YUI

March 12th, 2008 | No Comments | Tags: , , , , , ,

The kidnap of Christian Heilmann went down a treat last month, with a bumper crowd (60ish) turning up at Old Broadcasting House to hear about the YUI - The Yahoo! User Interface Library.

We were really proud to be playing host to such a top chap and a big thanks to Christian for venturing all the way up North in the interests of broadening our technical horizons. Version 2.5 of the YUI was released later on that evening and we were pleased to help kick off the celebrations.

Our Friends
First up, I’d like to say a big thanks to all involved in making this happen:

The Coverage
Don’t miss:

Please Call Again
We hope to see you all at the next GeekUp Leeds, on 19th March at the Living Room on Greek Street.

GeekUp’s take place every second Tuesday of the month in Manchester, every third Wednesday in Leeds and every last Thursday in Liverpool and all GeekUp’s are free to attend!

GeekUp Special: YUI - Javascript Evolved? Tomorrow!

February 19th, 2008 | No Comments | Tags: , , , ,

This month we’ll be moving away from our regular venue and venturing up to Old Broadcasting House for an exciting GeekUp special.

YUI!?
It’s the Yahoo User Interface Library and in the interests of broadening your technological horizons, we’ve kidnapped Christian Heilmann.

Who?
Christian Heilmann. He works for Yahoo! UK as trainer and web architect and oversees code quality for the big purple Y! in Europe and Asia. He’s also written a book or two and numerous articles on Javascript and web technologies for A List Apart, Ajaxian, Thinkvitamin and Digital Web.

That not enough for you? Well he’s a member of the Web Standards Project’s DOM Scripting Task Force and if we hadn’t hornswoggled him then you’d probably find Chris speaking at a reputable conference like @media ajax or Ajax World.

What about the beer!?
We’ve arranged for a real ale bar for the night also serving the usual lager, wine and a few nibbles.

A little help from our friends
GeekUp Leeds isn’t normally sponsored but this month’s special wouldn’t be possible without: River Networks, Rattle Research, BlueSkyPR and Met:Space

Coming?
Tell us then

GeekUp Leeds - 6pm, Wed 21st Nov, 2007

November 15th, 2007 | No Comments | Tags: , , , ,

Hot on the heals of BarCamp Leeds is the 6th GeekUp Leeds! This month I’ve been assured we’ll be back in our old room out the back after our surprise room change last month.

GeekUp veteran Dominic Hodgson (aka “the Hodge”) will be giving us a 20:20 lightning talk on “from 10 to 10,000 listeners, in a year and a half - The power of podcasting”.

There’s still one scheduled 20:20 slot free so do get in touch if there’s something you’d like to get off your chest… Plus we’ll honour our traditional ad-hoc 20:20 slot for anyone with a last minute talk or announcement.

* 20:20 presentation format

Last month, we had another great turnout despite the room change! Big thanks to Rahoul Baruah (aka Baz) for telling us “Why Rails programmers are so smug”, he gave us an informative (and impressively timed) Rails talk - providing the inspiration needed to pick up Rails for the first time.

We also had a last minute addition - Lee Strafford stood up to tell us about project Sahara, which I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more about this weekend at BarCamp.
