Do tell us if you’re coming

November GeekUp Leeds Roundup & NorthCast

December 12th, 2007 | No Comments | Tags: , ,

November GeekUp turned out to be a cracker, once again, with a great turnout, so thank you everyone!

A big thank you to Dom (the Hodge) Hodgson for another great presentation - “from 10 to 10,000 listeners, in a year and a half - The power of podcasting”.

Dom also gave us a sneak preview of NorthCast, the exciting new bi-weekly (that’s twice a month) podcast, which I’m proud to be part of (in spirit so far at least anyway), along with GeekUp veterans Paul Stanton and Ryan Taylor.

NorthCast is dedicated to all things tech in the North - news, events, start-ups and interviews - so get your flatcaps on - NorthCast will be coming your way soon! NorthCast is run by the community, for the community, so if you have something you’d like to get off your chest, do get in touch.

We were pleased to have another last minute addition this month - Tom Smith (of everythingability & head York monkey) stepped up to give us a completely improvised talk on django, the python web framework, with only a few website mishaps from me (as I tried to navigate the django site), the talk was fully entertaining and informative, so thanks Tom!

GeekUp Leeds - 6pm, Wed 21st Nov, 2007

Hot on the heals of BarCamp Leeds is the 6th GeekUp Leeds! This month I’ve been assured we’ll be back in our old room out the back after our surprise room change last month.

GeekUp veteran Dominic Hodgson (aka “the Hodge”) will be giving us a 20:20 lightning talk on “from 10 to 10,000 listeners, in a year and a half - The power of podcasting”.

There’s still one scheduled 20:20 slot free so do get in touch if there’s something you’d like to get off your chest… Plus we’ll honour our traditional ad-hoc 20:20 slot for anyone with a last minute talk or announcement.

Do tell us if you’re coming

Details:
* When: 6:00 PM Wednesday 21st November, 2007 (Talks start at 7:00PM)
* Where: The Lounge, St. Johns House, Merrion St, Leeds LS2 8JE

* GeekUp web site
* 20:20 presentation format

Last month, we had another great turnout despite the room change! Big thanks to Rahoul Baruah (aka Baz) for telling us “Why Rails programmers are so smug”, he gave us an informative (and impressively timed) Rails talk - providing the inspiration needed to pick up Rails for the first time.

We also had a last minute addition - Lee Strafford stood up to tell us about project Sahara, which I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more about this weekend at BarCamp.

GeekUp Leeds - 6pm, Wed 17th Oct, 2007

I’m pleased to announce the 5th GeekUp Leeds! We can’t quite promise the same entertainment as last month’s, but the line-up is looking pretty good so far.

Rahoul Baruah (aka Baz) will be giving us a 20:20 on “Why Rails programmers are so smug” - an outline of his favourite features of both Ruby and Rails, and how they can help you build web applications quickly and easily.

There’s still one scheduled 20:20 slot free so do get in touch if there’s something you’d like to get off your chest…

In true tradition we will also honour our turn-up-on-the-night-with-a-20:20-slot, where it’s left up to the GeekUp crowd to decide on the night who gets to talk. The 20:20 format is outlined on the GeekUp wiki but it’s essentially 20 slides, with 20 seconds per slide.

Last month, we were fortunate enough to have 3 fabulous speakers. First up was Tim with his snappy review of the Leeds Open Street Map mapping party, it was great to see how the Leeds coverage progressed in the space of a weekend. Thanks also to Phil for his MIX mastication - with bonus points for added props & heckling! James Holden filled our turn-up-on-the-night-with-a-20:20 slot, where he told us all about how interactive text messaging works and how you can use it in your own projects, so big thanks to him.
